On August 31, 2024, Baha Madzo Gadze for Charity -CBO in Kilifi County organised a successful clean-up activity, dubbed Underneath the Mnarani Foot Bridge Cleanup. With the participation of dedicated volunteers and local Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), this event not only aimed to beautify the area but to also foster a culture of environmental stewardship among residents.
Every year, an estimated 8 million tons of plastic waste end up in oceans, threatening marine life and ecosystems. This staggering statistic serves as a wake-up call for communities worldwide to take action.
Participation
With over 100 volunteers participating, the event saw a remarkable turnout from residents, especially from local CBOs, including Friends for Climate, Mkono Kwa Mkono, and Hand in Hand Eastern Africa. The collective efforts highlighted the community’s strong commitment to environmental stewardship.
“Together, we can change the world,” said Mr. Zero Plastic, a prominent advocate for environmental responsibility. “I appreciate Friends for Climate, Hand in Hand Eastern, and Mkono Kwa Mkono CBO for their support towards this environmental journey.”
Waste Collection Achievements
The cleanup activities yielded impressive results. A total of 76 sacks of waste were collected, which included 15 sacks of plastic waste, 6 sacks of rubber waste, and 54 sacks of organic waste. This initiative underscores the critical need for responsible waste management practices in the community.
The Need for Environmental Awareness
Despite the success, challenges remain. Mr. Zero Plastic emphasized the importance of education in fostering behavioral change among community members. “The message on behavior change has not taken root in the majority of community members. If it had, irresponsible waste disposal would not be a daily concern.”
By focusing on the communal aspect of waste management, Mr. Zero Plastic urged local residents to recognize that environmental responsibility is a shared obligation. “They should learn how to be responsible and understand that waste is not an issue for one person but for all of us,” he added.
A Step Towards a Healthier Community
The Underneath the Mnarani Foot Bridge Cleanup serves as a pivotal reminder of the impact that community collaboration can have on environmental conservation. The event’s success is as a result of collaborative initiatives and the importance of community involvement in maintaining clean and healthy surroundings.
Call to Action
Baha Madzo Gadze for Charity -CBO calls on community members to join the movement for a cleaner, healthier community by participating in future events, advocating for responsible waste management, and spreading awareness about the importance of environmental conservation.
