Daisy Okiring, Mombasa, Kenya – 8th August 2024 – The Zero Plastic Era Campaign, organized by Baha Madzo Gadze for Charity and Environmental Non-Profit Organization, is on the ground in Kilifi. The campaign, which started on August 5th and will run until August 11th, aims to clean and preserve the environment while promoting community involvement in maintaining clean public spaces.
On August 7th, the third day of the campaign, activities were held in Kisumu Ndogo from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Hosted at the Mkono Kwa Mkono Initiative’s office, the event has seen active participation from several partner organisations including Friends for Climate, Hand in Hand Eastern Africa, and Able Dreams CBO.
Twelve dedicated volunteers have collaborated to collect plastic waste from the designated area, gathering a total of 8 sacks, each weighing approximately 1.5 kg. This effort has since seen the removal of about 12 kg of plastic waste.
Mr. Steven Fanuel Otieno aka Mr. Zero Plastic, the campaign spokesperson, shared his thoughts on the progress so far: “We are thrilled with the community’s response and the dedication of our volunteers. Every piece of plastic collected is a step towards a cleaner environment. The support from local organizations has been incredible, and it’s encouraging to see everyone come together for this cause.”
The campaign, which has already covered various wards in the city center of Kilifi, will move to the beaches under the Kilifi Bridge tomorrow, the 9th August.
The final day will see the efforts return to Mnarani, where the campaign began. Reflecting on the impact of the campaign, Mr. Zero Plastic added, “The success of this campaign is to be a testament to what we can achieve when we work together. Our goal is not just to clean up the environment but also to raise awareness and inspire others to take action. We hope to see more volunteers join us in the coming days”.
